Important Updates and Safety Reminders

COVID-19 | April 15, 2020

Today, Council discussed actions and impacts in response to COVID-19 to improve safety and help mitigate impacts on residents and businesses.

“As we continue to manage this health pandemic, we ask that residents please do their part by respecting the rules for the safety of our community,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “We continue to see people disrespecting park amenity closures, not keeping a safe distance or bending the rules when it comes to gatherings with family and friends. We have also seen a rise in littering of medical gloves and masks outside grocery stores and pharmacies across our city. This is a health concern and a safety risk. Those found violating these rules will face fines. Please be good neighbours and friends and stay at home where possible. This is the only way we will help flatten the curve. We are all in this together.”

Renewal Fees Deferred for Animal and Mobile Licences

·          Renewal fees are being deferred for Pet licensing and the Mobile Licensing until June 1 or 30 days after the re-opening of public counters.

At last week’s Council meeting, our Finance team presented a report outlined the City’s current financial position.

Hiring Suspended

To assist with mitigating the financial impact of COVID-19, City of Mississauga hiring will be suspended temporarily for all positions effective end of day Tuesday, April 14. Essential services will be maintained.

Litter and Waste Dumping

• All litter, particularly masks and gloves as well as dog waste must be disposed of properly using the appropriate waste containers available or by bringing it home.
• Dumping household waste and garbage is unacceptable and in contravention of the City’s Debris and Anti Littering By-law and is actively being enforced. Dumping can be reported online.

Enforcement Actions

• The City of Mississauga is actively enforcing all Provincial Orders as well as facility and park amenity closures, including the closure of parking lots at parks

• Security Officers are patrolling parks and are educating and enforcing emergency orders to limit gatherings of 5 or more (unless living in same household) and issuing fines of at least $750 where applicable.
• Those found littering medical gloves, masks or any other personal protective equipment (PPE) can face littering fines starting at $365

• Set fines for non-compliance range from $750 to $1000

In these challenging times, the City of Mississauga is focused on supporting our older adult community. The City has launched a new web page that provides guidance for older residents  and their caregivers to help meet their needs.

“Our older adult community is one of the most vulnerable when it comes to COVID-19,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The City’s new web page provides easy to find, at-a-glance information for older adults and caregivers. This is something that our older adults asked for and I am pleased that we are able to provide this resource to help meet their needs, enhance their well-being and improve outcomes.”

Residents can find information on symptoms and prevention, health and wellness and key emergency contacts. The web page also provides links to online Library services and free online videos, workouts and other resources to help older adults stay healthy while practicing physical distancing.

A printable information sheet is also available on the web page.

Anyone who may not be able to access the web page is advised to ask a friend or family member to assist.

The Mississauga Food Bank is accepting donations to help support older adults and others who are relying on food banks during this time.

Trillium Health Centre Partners are accepting donations of personal protective equipment (PPE) as they continue to provide care for older adults and other patients in response to COVID-19.
