City of Mississauga Adjusts City Services According to New Provincial COVID-19 Measures

By Covid-19, Issues, Resources, Ward 1

December 17, 2021

Today, the Government of Ontario announced new restrictions to respond to increasing COVID-19 case numbers and slow the spread of the Omicron variant in the province.

“The City of Mississauga supports the restrictions announced today,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “While I know this is not the holidays we all imagined, I am hopeful that these measures act as the ‘circuit breaker’ we need to curb the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. We need to ensure we are doing all we can to slow the spread of this very transmissible strain of COVID-19 and protect the capacity of our hospital system. Please use every tool at your disposal. Follow public health measures including getting your booster if you are eligible, reducing your contacts and taking advantage of the province’s free rapid tests if gathering with family and friends. Please consider smaller gatherings this holiday season to help protect the progress we’ve made and our family, friends and neighbours.”

Starting Sunday, December 19, the Government of Ontario is introducing a 50 per cent capacity limit in certain indoor public settings. These include:

  • Gyms
  • Indoor recreational amenities
  • Marinas and boating clubs
  • Personal care services
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Retailers (including grocery stores and pharmacies)

These limits do not apply to any portion of a business or place that is being used for a wedding, funeral or  religious ceremony.

Additional protective measures are also being applied:

  • The number of patrons permitted to sit at a table will be limited to 10 people and patrons will be required to remain seated in restaurants and bars.
  • Bars, restaurants, meeting and event spaces will be required to close by 11 p.m.
  • Take out and delivery will be permitted beyond 11 p.m.
  • The sale of alcohol will be restricted after 10 p.m. and consumption of alcohol in businesses or settings after 11 p.m.
  • Food and drink services will be prohibited at indoor sporting events and concert venues.

For a full list of the new measures implemented by the Government of Ontario, please visit Ontario.ca/covid19.

Update on City services as of Sunday, December 19:

  • In accordance with the Provincial Regulations, the City of Mississauga Recreation and Culture facilities will limit overall capacity to 50 per cent.
  • The 50 per cent capacity limit applies to Raptors 905 (NBA G League), Mississauga Steelheads (OHL) and other live event partners, at our live event venues, including the Paramount Fine Foods Centre and the Living Arts Centre.  Any impacted ticket holders will be contacted in advance regarding refund information.
  • No food or beverages will be available during indoor  events as concessions will be temporarily closed. Spectators must remain seated during any events and wear a mask at all times.
  • Meeting spaces at City of Mississauga facilities will close by 11 p.m.
  • The City of Mississauga will not be implementing any additional reservation requirements for drop-in programs and activities at this time. These programs and activities can be accessed on a first-come, first served basis.

Update on 1 Port St

By Issues, Resources, Ward 1

The City is underway with an Environmental Assessment (EA) under the Environmental Assessment Act for the 1 Port Street East Proposed Marina Project. The first step of the process was the preparation of a Terms of Reference. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks approved the City’s Terms of Reference for the 1 Port Street East Proposed Marina Project on Thursday September 16, 2021. The Terms of Reference sets out the City’s work plan for addressing the EA Act requirements, including the alternatives that will be considered and public consultation, including up to three PICs at key decision points.

The City is preparing for a virtual EA PIC #1 in February 2022. The purpose of this PIC is to:

– Introduce the EA and share an updated project schedule
– Present background project information to be included in the EA
– Present the preliminary lakefill alternatives and the comparative evaluation
– Seek feedback on the lakefill alternatives and evaluation through a survey
– Discuss next steps

The EA PIC #1 will include a recorded video presentation and a survey, giving the public an opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions. The EA PIC #1 presentation and survey will be available for one month, creating a 24/7 community meeting where the public can review materials at their leisure. The City will provide a feedback summary, and answer any questions submitted through the survey. Details will be posted on the project website in the near future. The public is encouraged to sign up for news alerts to be notified of project updates by email.

Haig Boulevard Closure – Customer Notification Letter

By Issues, Resources, Ward 1

December 8, 2021

SUBJECT: Alectra Railway Crossing Overhead to Underground Conversion Project

Haig Boulevard, between Carnegie Dr and Lakeshore Rd E (Lakeshore West Railway line)

Dear Customer:

Alectra Utilities, your local Hydro Distribution company is committed to providing quality service and a reliable supply of electricity to all our customers. In keeping with this commitment, Alectra Utilities will be removing overhead conductor crossings over the railway along the Lakeshore West Line and installing underground cables under the railway.

Alectra Utilities will be working primarily on the north side of the tracks, approximately 100m south of Carnegie Dr, and South side of the tracks, along Haig Blvd.

The surrounding areas of Haig Boulevard, between Carnegie Dr and Lakeshore Rd E will be impacted minimally by construction activities. In addition, the current road closure will be required until February 25, 2022 during construction at the railway crossing on Haig Boulevard, weather permitting. The pedestrian walkway over the railway will remain open during this time.

This project will require significant excavation along the Municipal Road Allowance to relocate the underground and overhead electrical distribution equipment. Additionally, construction vehicles and equipment will be apparent, and present during construction. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Alectra Utilities will adhere to best construction practices, ensuring a safe work zone

Furthermore, entrance(s) to driveways may be impacted during construction; however, every effort to coordinate safe vehicular passage during construction will be undertaken.

Scheduled power interruptions will be required to safely complete the electrical changeover and every attempt will be made to notify you in advance of any interruption of hydro service.

Construction is scheduled to recommence in December 2021, through extended weekday work hours and work on Saturdays, the railway crossing is targeted to be reopened on February 25, 2022, weather permitting. Subsequent to the reopening of Haig Blvd to traffic, minimal thru-traffic configurations may occur in order to complete residual overhead powerline work and commissioning into early March 2022.

Scheduled outage notification will be by phone, please ensure that your primary contact phone number attached to your Alectra Utilities account is current.

Alectra Utilities would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding field and construction related issues, please contact Mark Bobanovic, Alectra Inspection Supervisor: 416-553-4314. Neighbourhood Watch Forum

By Issues, Resources, Ward 1

Our School Watch program is now open to all high-school students in the city! This is a wonderful opportunity for your children to take part in a Watch program and engage in community safety! Please share with any youth in your neighbourhoods and families! Registration Link: https://safecitymississauga.online/signup/school-watch-member/azwz79qjbj School Watch is an adaptation of the Neighbourhood Watch and Business Watch programs, in which high school students look out for one another and their school. The program focuses on identifying local issues, educating students on crime prevention and increasing the reporting of suspicious activity and crime to improve student safety and well-being. The School Watch courses include information on how the program works, why students should join, and how to observe and report, as well as concise information on common school issues like bullying from a crime prevention perspective. For example, our short course on bullying includes prevention tips and how bullying may impact a students future if it gets to the level of being a crime. School Watch members will be encouraged to report any crime and suspicious activity which they observe in and around their schools. Students will access local reporting resources such as The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board Online Reporting Tool and Peel Crime Stoppers Anonymous Reporting Line. There are many community supports also provided, including specific resources for Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ youth. All School Watch members will have access to our campaigns, which include courses and toolkits. The toolkits are a guide for students to lead campaigns in their own schools. Students who act as “Campaign Leads” will promote awareness and encourage students to take the campaign courses, while earning volunteer hours in the process.

Vacuum Leaf Collection Program Update

By Issues, Resources, Ward 1

We have received a number of requests for a third pick-up as leaves have now fallen from most of the trees.  After reviewing our budgets, resources and the weather for next week, staff can confirm we will extend the program into this week.  With this extension, we cannot guarantee we will be able to collect all remaining leaves.  Crews will go back and start in the YELLOW zones and collect any remaining leaves at the roadside, before moving on to the BLUE and then GREEN zones, weather permitting.

You can refer to the leaf pickup route map and schedule to find out if your street is part of the leaf pickup program.
