January marks the elimination of Mississauga Library’s fines for overdue materials. By going fine free, the library is promoting equitable access to its services.
“The time for going fine free is now, as we continue to provide access to library services for all and help our residents through the pandemic,” said Rona O’Banion, Director, Mississauga Library. “This change brings Mississauga Library in line with many other systems across Canada and North America, including Brampton, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener, Ottawa, Vaughan, Chicago and Denver. At the same time, we encourage all customers to return items on time to ensure everyone has access to our materials. ”
All existing overdue fines will be removed from customer accounts on January 31. Customers will continue to be responsible for returning items on time and will receive reminders about pending due dates and notices when items become overdue.
Non-resident fees as well as charges for lost or damaged items and holds that have not been picked up will remain in place. Borrowed items will be automatically renewed up to five times as long as there are no holds placed on them. Customers can sign up to receive email notifications for return due dates by calling 905-615-3500 or by email at support.library@mississauga.ca.
Staff proposed the elimination of overdue fines during the 2022 Budget discussions. Council approved the change when the City’s 2022 – 2025 Business Plan and 2022 Budget was approved on December 8, 2021.
