LDD Moth (Gypsy Moth) – Free Webinar on April 20th, 2022 at 6:30 a.m.

Credit Valley, Halton, Hamilton, Lake Simcoe, and Toronto Region Conservation Authorities are pleased to offer a free informational webinar on the LDD moth (or spongy moth, previously known as European gypsy moth) on Wednesday, April 20th at 6:30pm. The webinar will provide an overview of the LDD moth life cycle, how to identify them, infestation forecasts for 2022, and management options that property owners can consider. Conservation authority experts will be in attendance to answer questions from participants.

Registration for the webinar will open on Friday, March 25th with the registration link available on CVC’s LDD moth webpage and events calendar. A recording of the webinar will subsequently be made available on CVC’s LDD moth webpage.

City of Mississauga Ends Declared Emergency Order and Rescinds Mandatory Face Mask By-Law

On the two year anniversary of the declaration, Mayor Bonnie Crombie, with support from Members of Council, ended the declared emergency order in response to COVID-19. The emergency order was enacted on March 23, 2020.

In addition, to be consistent with changes made by the Government of Ontario, and with recommendation from Dr. Lawrence Loh, Region of Peel’s Medical Officer of Heath, the City of Mississauga is lifting its Mandatory Face Mask By-Law, effective immediately.

“The ending of the Emergency Order and the lifting of the mask by-law are huge milestones for Mississauga. And we’re only in this position now because of the enormous sacrifices everyone in our community has made. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank all residents for helping us get through the most challenging time in our City’s history,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “As we enter this new phase, I do ask all residents to please be respectful of the personal choices others are make when it comes to masking, as everyone has different comfort levels.”

That means wearing a face mask when visiting City facilities is no longer mandatory and all businesses in Mississauga including condos and apartment buildings are not required to enforce masking in public, indoor settings. Residents however, may choose to continue wearing a mask if they feel more comfortable.

Masks are still required for all public transit in Ontario until at least April 27, which applies to Mississauga’s MiWay buses.

The Mandatory Face Mask By-Law was put in place in July 2020 in response to COVID-19.

City seeks volunteers for Garlic Mustard Task Force

The City’s Forestry Section is looking for resident volunteers for its Garlic Mustard Task Force to help steward local natural areas by removing the invasive Garlic Mustard plant is an invasive species that was brought to North America as a food source and for herbal medicine.

In natural areas, Garlic Mustard outperforms native species by crowding out and displacing native plants such as Trillium flowers.

The City is currently taking measures to reduce the Garlic Mustard population in Mississauga, but since it can double in size in four years time, the recruitment of interested volunteers is needed to help fight against the growth of Garlic Mustard.

Task Force volunteers will receive training, supplies and be assigned a designated park or natural area near their homes to complete a series of Garlic Mustard removal pulls during the spring each year.

Passion for Parkinson’s Foundation – Painting with Parkinson’s

I am so  excited to announce that The Passion for Parkinson’s Foundation has aligned with the City of Mississauga to offer our community a specifically designed Painting with Parkinson’s program commencing this April.
Facilitated by a credentialed art instructor, the program will explore watercolour and acrylic paint techniques, colour theory and line space. The class will focus on stimulating creativity , exploring feelings, and developing social skills. It’s not about artistic excellence. It’s about fun, freedom of expression with  the stroke of a brush.
Classes will be held on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 am to 12:00pm . The first class in April 20th , 2022. All materials are included and classes  will be held at the Small Arms Inspection Building. (Dixie and Lakeshore Rd) Classes will be 8 weeks in duration.
The Small Arms Inspection Building is a historic,18,000 square foot multi-purpose building. It serves as a cultural hub for a wide range of arts and cultural programs, exhibitions and events. Surrounded by windows, natural light, and scenic park views combined with industrial interior design the venue is ideally suited for painting classes.

Annual Spring Clean Up Street Sweeping Program

Please be advised that our annual spring clean-up street sweeping program will begin next month.

Residents and road users are usually eager for street sweeping to begin when the weather starts warming up. However, we begin the spring clean-up street sweeping program when the temperatures are mild and the roads are clear of all snow, usually early in the spring.

Starting the program in spring also allows us to remove winter maintenance equipment from the Works yards when it is no longer needed to make space for street sweepings. In addition, the supply of water used for the program is contingent on temperatures remaining above the freezing point.

After our spring clean-up is complete, we will continue maintaining roadways through our regular street sweeping program.

Dundas Corridor Policy Implementation

About the Project

The Dundas Street Corridor is a vibrant street and is a vital part of the City’s transportation network. Over the next 35 to 40 years, the City estimates that the number of people using Dundas Street will grow. This growth is guided by:

The City has been taking steps through different studies to advance the vision of the Dundas Connect Master Plan. Many of the studies are underway, and will include their own community engagement.

The City is advancing the vision of the DCMP through these projects. It is also drafting an Official Plan Amendment that implements the DCMP endorsed recommendations. The Official Plan Amendment will proceed once the Region has implemented the Major Transit Station Area policies, followed by the City’s own Major Transit Station Area policies. The approval of the Major Transit station Area policies will need to happen first before the Dundas Connects Master Plan policy implementation.

On May 10th, 2021, staff provided an update to Council’s Planning and Development Committee, summarizing the projects underway and sharing the next steps in implementing the endorsed DCMP. View the report
