City of Mississauga Donates Spring Flowers to Health Care Professionals

By Covid-19, Events, Uncategorized

April 24, 2020

The City of Mississauga is donating approximately 1,500 pansies, ranunculus and primrose as a gesture of thanks to hospital workers and health care providers at Trillium Health Partners.

“We are incredibly grateful to our hospital and health care heroes who are on the front lines battling the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “This is a small gesture but one we believe shows Mississauga’s support for the dedicated men and women who courageously go to work to keep us healthy and safe. They are working while we stay home so that together, we can flatten the curve. On behalf of Council, we salute our health care heroes at Trillium Health Partners. These flowers are a sign of spring and brighter days ahead. I hope they bring much needed light and joy during this very difficult time. ”

“The staff at Trillium Health Partners are working long hours under difficult circumstances,” said Caroline Riseboro, President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners Foundation. “This is a lovely and moving gesture from the City of Mississauga, one which reminds us that, even in dark times, beauty and renewal persist. On behalf of my colleagues at the hospital, a special thanks to Mayor Crombie and the City.”

“Plant materials for the City’s spring planting program, typically used in planters and gardens across the City, are ordered eight months in advance and could not be cancelled,” said Jodi Robillos, Director, Parks, Forestry and Environment.  “Our parks and forestry staff are preparing for the onset of spring which includes litter pick up and the mowing of turf but horticulture is not an essential service.  Rather than dispose of this plant material, a proposal was developed at the request of Mayor Crombie to donate the plants to hospital workers and health care providers at Trillium.”

City of Mississauga staff continue to provide essential services including waste collection, priority maintenance, legislated inspections, contract administration and bylaw enforcement during the COVID-19 crisis.

The City has partnered with Humberview Maintenance Group Ltd., Royalview Landscaping and Winsom Landscape Contractors who volunteered their staff time to collect and deliver the plants for distribution to each health care professionals as they exited the Trillium Hospitals professionals as they exited the Trillium Hospitals.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie and Councillor Stephen Dasko are greeted by President and CEO of Trillium Health Partners Michelle E. DiEmanuele as the City of Mississauga donates spring flowers to Health Care Professionals

Mississauga LeadsGTA with a Comprehensive Healthy Food and Beverage Policy

By Events

March 11, 2020

Residents visiting community centres for a fitness class or going to an arena to watch their kids play hockey will now have healthier snack and drink options. The City is implementing a new Healthy Food and Beverage Policy for Recreation facilities starting September 1, 2020.

“Mississauga’s new healthy food and beverage policy is the strongest stance taken by any municipality in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA),” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie.  “We worked closely with Peel Public Health with a goal of providing better food and beverage offerings that are in line with the Region’s Nutrition Standards. With obesity and diabetes on the rise in our community, this is one way our City can be part of the solution. Health is at the centre of active, thriving and prosperous cities.”

The new policy applies to vending machines and concession stands in all recreation facilities including arenas, activity centres, community centres, golf courses, marinas, outdoor pools, recreation centres and C Cafe, located in the Civic Centre. The policy excludes banquet services, the Paramount Fine Foods Centre and the Living Arts Centre.

“Our new policy supports the City’s 2019 Future Directions Recreation Master Plan recommendation related to providing a wider range of healthy food offerings at recreation facilities,” said Shari Lichterman, Director of Recreation. “We are seeing a shift in consumer demands for more nutritious food and beverages and with our recreation facilities hosting more than 12 million visitors annually, this policy will have a significant impact in contributing to healthy living for our residents.”

Lichterman added, “There are a number of recreation facilities that are close to schools. Fifteen of 19 community centres, arenas or activity centres are within 500 metres of schools. Having a policy that is supportive of the Ministry of Education’s School Food and Beverage Policy is critical to promoting a healthy lifestyle for students.”

The policy will be implemented in two phases:

Phase 1 – Beginning September 1, 2020

  • Highly processed foods such as processed meats, prepackaged foods such as chocolate bars and deep-fried foods such as french fries will be eliminated immediately

Phase 2 – Beginning May 1, 2021

  • At least 75 per cent of beverages will be water and carbonated water, unsweetened milk and plant-based

Upcoming beverage and vending purchasing agreements will comply with these nutrition guidelines. They will also be used as an opportunity to address priorities in the City’s Climate Change Action Plan.  Specifically, vendors will be required to eliminate single-use plastics in their food and beverage packaging, in addition to other sustainability factors.

The City’s Healthy Food and Beverage Policy is set to go to Council for final approval on March 18.

Background:
In August 2019, City staff worked with Peel Public Health to complete nutritional assessments of vending and concession services at city recreation facilities. The results were compared with the Region’s Nutrition Standards which provided a baseline to measure future results. The assessment found beverage and food offerings needed to be improved to fully meet the Region’s nutrition standards. The City also reviewed other provinces and municipalities who have recently developed healthy food and beverage guidelines, action plans, strategies and policies.

Water Interruptions – March 9, 2020

By Events, Issues

The Region of Peel Public Works department regularly maintains and repairs the water
system to make sure you have a reliable supply of quality drinking water. Sometimes the Region turns off your water supply while they do the work.

Water will be turned off on Monday, March 9, 2020 from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, if the weather is bad or if a problem arises, we will reschedule the work and will let you know the new date and time.

When the Region turns the water back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise. If this happens, you can remove the air by briefly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor and finishing on the top floor). Flush the toilets as well.

You should only have to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds, but keep running it until the
water is clear and any vibration or noise has stopped.

If your water meter starts to leak, call Water Meter Installations Dispatch at:
(905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 3226 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Monday to Friday)
(905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 4409 (After hours or Statutory Holidays)

FAQs

What can I expect?

This event is a great way to experience Ontario craft beer and cideries, whether you’re a seasoned sipper or interested in expanding your palette/knowledge.

The Small Arms Inspection Building is a City-owned 1940’s building that is mid-restoration after being rescued from the wrecking ball by our community. The space has a unique feel, with massive windows and a skylight running nearly end to end.

Is there an age restriction on the event?

This is a licenced event so all attendees must be 19 years or older (the age of majority). Please bring valid ID with you on the day of the event.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The Small Arms Inspection Building is located at 1352 Lakeshore Road East, on the south side, at Dixie Road. There is plenty of free car parking available on the site and in the area.

Please plan to drink responsibly and consider alternative transportation, including taxi service, ride-sharing or public transit, to make your experience more enjoyable. There is continuous MiWay bus transit using Route 23 along Lakeshore Road East connecting to the Long Branch GO Train station and TTC on the east (approximately 1 km) and to all points along Lakeshore to Port Credit and Clarkson.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?

Please do not bring alcohol or outside food to the event. There will be craft beer and cider locations for sampling and purchase, non-alcoholic beverages, in addition to a variety of food vendors.

Is my ticket transferrable?

Tickets are transferable, but your receipt is required as proof of your purchase.

Are any profits made going to a good cause?

Mississauga Creative Craft Beer Festival is presented by CreativeHub1352 (formerly the Small Arms Society), an incorporated non-profit organization. Our goal is to celebrate creativity and to continue our role in helping to define and promote the community vision for this important space. We saved this building from dereliction and now we must provide resources to help the community shape it as a place of significance for generations to come. That takes time, dedication and money.

This Festival is run by volunteers with financial support from our wonderful sponsors. We have done our utmost to keep the costs down and your ticket price low. Please buy a ticket and bring your friends, too!

Are ticket sales and space limited?

While the Small Arms Inspection Building is a large space, capacity constraints means that only a limited number of tickets will be made available for each of the three sessions. We urge you to buy now to avoid disappointment!

Is the Mississauga Creative Craft Beer Festival accessible?

Yes. The main exhibition space and all public facilities are barrier-free and include gender neutral washrooms.

As in any private or public building, it is a smoke-free and vape-free environment.

Please note that this is not an Allergen-free event/venue.

How can I further support your group/ Can I become a Solidarity Member of CreativeHub1352?
