The City of Mississauga has selected Kristina Zietsma as the new Director of Recreation, following an internal and external competition. Zietsma, who will assume the role effective November 30, 2020, has been the Acting Director since May 2020, when Shari Lichterman was promoted to Commissioner of Community Services.
“Kristina has a great understanding of the many business areas in the Recreation portfolio from her time working at our community centres and working her way up the management ranks,” said Shari Lichterman, Commissioner of Community Services. “My thanks to her for her leadership of the division during this transition, while managing through the pandemic and its significant impact to our services and staff.”
In her role as Director, Zietsma will oversee the Recreation Division which is responsible for recreation facilities and programs, community partnerships and affiliations, facility rentals, sponsorship, sport development, banquet and food services and community events support.
“I am proud to work for the City of Mississauga and am committed to continuing to provide residents with the recreation programs, services and facilities that contribute to Mississauga’s high quality of life,” said Zietsma. “In my role as Director, I look forward to working with all Recreation staff, the City’s Leadership Team and working closely with Mayor and Council.”
Zietsma has worked for the City for over 16 years, in various front-line and leadership roles. Starting her career at City community centres, she moved on to manage the Recreation Customer Service Centre and more recently to oversee all Recreation program delivery, standards, training and volunteers. She has led key projects for the division over the years, from enterprise system replacement to fee assistance programs.
Zietsma studied Recreation and Leisure at Mohawk College and has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto.
