A TREE DEDICATION FOR ALICE CASSELMAN

Mississauga, Ontario, August 4th – In recognition of all her work for both the environment and community, a tree will be presented to Alice Casselman, the founding president of ACER, by the City of Mississauga’s Ward 1 and 3 councillors, Stephen Dasko and Chris Fonseca. This ceremony and mini tour will begin at 3:00pm at Fleetwood Park (2000 Burnhamthorpe Rd. E) and everyone is welcome to attend.

For years Alice Casselman, through ACER, has been giving both individuals and organizations opportunities to get involved within their communities to help plant, maintain and monitor trees. Over time, Alice has worked, with support from the City of Mississauga, to increase canopy cover vital to building climate resilience in neighbourhoods. ACER has also planted and monitored hundreds of trees and has provided educational opportunities for countless students through the Planting for Change and Canada Summer Jobs programs.

This event will be open to the entire community and will celebrate Alice and her work.

ACER’s Mission:

ACER is a non-profit organization dedicated to building climate resilience through planting, measuring and monitoring trees. Through various programs, ACER educates volunteers about climate change and provides opportunities for communities to better the tree canopy in their own backyards.

SCOOP THAT POOP!

It’s all about responsibility – As good dog owners, we should set a good example by being courteous and law abiding by leashing, licensing and picking up after our dogs.

There is no excuse for not picking up after your dog. It is not fertilizer, it does not break down quickly, it pollutes our water and it causes harm to humans and the environment. Neglecting to pick up after your dog could mean that someone else picks it up…under their shoes. Respect your community and clean up after your dog to keep Mississauga safe and enjoyable for everyone.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dog waste is not recyclable. Place it in a waste container designated for dog waste or take it home and dispose of it responsibly.

Dog waste is not fertilizer – it does not break down naturally. Dog waste takes months to break down, is highly acidic and can harm the soil, killing grass and plants.

Dog waste contains E-coli bacteria and other parasites that are harmful to humans and animals. Diseases can be transmitted by contact with dog waste. Dog waste contaminates beaches and other public spaces, posing serious health hazards to children playing nearby and to other people and animals.

Dog waste can contaminate the water supply. When it rains, dog waste soaks into groundwater and into storm sewers which flow to nearby streams and watersheds, affecting our drinking water and making swimming areas unsafe.

Dog waste can attract wildlife. Dog waste can attract coyotes into residential neighbourhoods and parks, which can lead to pet conflicts and nuisance behaviour.

It’s the law. You can be fined for not picking up after your dog. If you think no one is watching, remember that almost everyone has a camera (including those on smartphones). If you observe someone in your neighbourhood not picking up after their pet please report it by contacting 905-615-3200 extension 2425.

As per the Animal Care and Control By-law 0098-04, as amended, Part VII, Section 25) subsection 1) Every owner of an animal shall remove forthwith any excrement left by the animal on any property including highways. Failing to do so carries a maximum penalty of $100,000.

The average dog produces 274 lbs of pet waste per year, with roughly 60,000 dogs in Mississauga -that’s 16.4 million lbs of pet waste per year!

Dog waste contains high levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, E-coli bacteria and other parasites that are harmful to humans, other animals and the environment. Pet waste left on the ground washes into the stormwater system and pollutes our water too!

Picking up pet waste protects our community health and environment! Clean up after your dog and keep Mississauga safe and enjoyable for everyone.

After the water interruption:

Update: Road Closure at Mineola Road East and Hurontario Street – Monday July 31, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

What work is taking place?

Construction crews will be making the final watermain connection in this area. This will result in the temporary full closure of Mineola Road East at Hurontario Street on July 31, 2023. The work is scheduled to take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. The roadway will be closed throughout this period and access for emergency vehicles will not be maintained. Emergency vehicles will use an alternate route as required and a paid duty police officer will be present to control traffic at the intersection during construction hours. Any temporary disruption to water service will be communicated in advance by a Region of Peel representative.

In accordance with City of Mississauga Noise By-Law Exemption requirements, this notice is meant to advise that residents near the work site can expect to hear noise and vibration caused by trucks, excavators, backhoes, and other construction equipment related to this work, so crews will be able to complete this work safely and efficiently.

MiWay Route 8 will be affected by the closure of Mineola Road East and there will not be transit service on Mineola Road/Atwater Avenue. Instead, the route will travel along Cawthra Road to Lakeshore Road. Visit www.miway.ca/updates for updates.

During this closure, motorists can access Mineola Road East from Hurontario Street using the detour map provided. Please note, work may be rescheduled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. If you require the most up-to-date information, please reach out to peel@metrolinx.com.

UPDATE – PROGRAM IS FULL – Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program – Get ahead of winter weather and apply for the Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program

WINDROW PROGRAM IS NOW SOLD OUT AND NO LONGER TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR 2023

 

Registration for the City of Mississauga’s Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program is now open until Friday, December 1. The program supports Mississauga residents who are 65 years old and older as well as persons with physical disabilities.

A windrow is a pile of snow that is left at the end of a driveway after street snow-clearing operations are completed. Registered participants will get a three-metre space cleared in their driveway windrow so that a car can get in and out safely.

“Winter storms with heavier snowfall have become the new normal, making windrows an unpleasant but unavoidable part of winter in Mississauga and our neighbouring municipalities. We understand the challenges this creates for some residents, which is why we have expanded this popular program so that more residents can get the help they need this winter,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “We have more than doubled the number of spots in the program from 300 to 750. We’ve also opened registration early and extended the deadline. If you or someone you know has trouble clearing their driveway windrow and meets the program qualifications, I encourage you to consider applying.”

The Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Program runs from Friday, December 1, 2023 to Monday, March 11, 2024 and is available to 750 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $200 (non-refundable) for the season or free for those who meet financial assistance criteria.

“We are encouraging and asking those who are interested in this program to register as early as possible because winter weather is unpredictable,” said Helen Noehammer, Director, Works Operations and Maintenance. “When you apply for the program, we complete a site inspection of your driveway so that our crews are prepared to clear a space in the windrow properly and efficiently. Even though registration is open until December 1, any significant snow we get before then may not make it possible for our crews to complete the required driveway inspection. By applying early, we’re able to process your application and complete the necessary inspection so that we’re ready to clear your windrow when snow does arrive.”

You will need the following documents to apply:

  • A completed Driveway Windrow Snow Clearing Application Form
  • Proof of residency in Mississauga (e.g. driver’s licence, recent utility bill or lease agreement)
  • If you are 65 years of age or older, you’ll need to provide proof of your age (e.g. birth certificate, driver’s licence or passport)
  • If you are 64 years of age or under, you’ll need to submit one of the following as proof of a physical disability:
  • If you’re applying for the free program, you’ll also need to provide documents that show the total net income or earnings for your household
