Mississauga Celebrates Tourism Week 2023

By Dining, Events

From April 24 – 30, Tourism Mississauga and the City of Mississauga are recognizing Tourism Week. The City is joining the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) in recognizing the importance of tourism to our nation’s economic growth by encouraging Mississauga residents and visitors to support local tourism businesses across the city.

“After more than two very difficult years, the rebuilding of Mississauga’s tourism industry is underway, and we can all help our local businesses as they continue to recover,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Tourism is vital to our city and our country – not only for its capacity to generate huge economic activity, but also for showcasing Canada’s values as a nation: resilience, peace, tolerance, and inclusivity. With over 1,800 restaurants representing food from more than 150 countries, as well as many charming local shops and businesses and wonderful welcoming people, Mississauga truly has something for everyone. I encourage residents and visitors to explore everything Mississauga has to offer as we help our local businesses thrive again.”

These are some great ways to take part in Tourism Week:

  • Support a local restaurant
  • Check out a new attraction in Mississauga
  • Purchase tickets to an upcoming event or festival
  • Sign up for Tourism Mississauga’s Sauga Savings Pass to access exclusive offers and tourism deals across the city
  • Follow @VisitMississauga on social for more ideas of things to do with friends and family who are visiting

Businesses can also show their support for Tourism Week 2023:

“There is no better time to visit Mississauga or plan a fun staycation in our exciting city,” said Sam Kohli, Chair, Tourism Mississauga.  “With so many beautiful spots, great attractions and a variety of fabulous restaurants with delicious food, now’s the time to check out all we have to offer.”

The City will light the Civic Centre Clock Tower green on April 25 to mark Tourism Week. Community partners including the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Malton Business Improvement Association (BIA), the Port Credit BIA and the Port Credit Lighthouse will also show their support for Tourism Week by Lighting Up Green.

“This year’s theme for Tourism Week, CANADA: Powered by Tourism,  was chosen to recognize the fundamental economic and sociocultural importance of the tourism sector in Canadian communities from coast to coast to coast,” said Victoria Clarke, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Mississauga.  “Prior to COVID-19, tourism was responsible for nearly 1 in 10 jobs and $105 billion in annual spending in Canada, and was a leading economic driver in Mississauga. We’re excited to be fully open to welcome residents and visitors back to enjoy all of the great things our city has to offer. We hope you’ll join us in rediscovering Mississauga!”

Building More Homes: City Looks at New Housing Options in Neighbourhoods

By Events, Issues, Planning & Development, Ward 1

On Monday, April 17, staff will provide an update on the City’s ongoing efforts to expand low-rise housing options in Mississauga.

During the update, staff will review the current status and future directions of the Increasing Housing Choices in Neighbourhoods study which is looking at ways to allow more gentle density across the city. The City is looking at how best to permit more housing types such as semi-detached homes, townhouses, duplexes, triplexes and multiplexes in Mississauga neighbourhoods. Garden suites, laneway housing and garage conversions are also being reviewed as part of the study.

Adding gentle density in residential neighbourhoods could provide more housing options for families, older adults, students and Mississauga’s workforce. It is a key action of Growing Mississauga, the City’s recently released action plan on new housing.

Final recommendations including draft Official Plan policies and zoning regulations will be brought forward later this year as part of the City’s Official Plan Review.

Background

The City’s Increasing Housing Choices in Neighbourhoods (IHCN) Study supports changes to the Planning Act, which requires municipalities to permit up to two additional residential units on lots with a single detached, semi-detached or row house. It will also ensure City policies are aligned with the Provincial Policy Statement, 2020, which encourages municipalities to permit a range and mix of housing types such as garden suites and triplexes, and arrangements such as co-ownership and home sharing.

In addition to being a key action of the City’s new housing plan, Growing Mississauga, the IHCN study also moves forward key recommendations from the City’s affordable housing strategy – Making Room for the Middle. The strategy, which was approved by Council in 2017, concluded that the range of housing for middle income earners – such as teachers, nurses and social workers – is dwindling. It supports finding ways to remove barriers to affordable housing and providing residents with more housing choices as they go through different life stages.

Housing affordability is a major issue in Mississauga and the wider GTA. Providing greater housing choices and protecting as well as encouraging new affordable housing supply are priorities for the City.

Dear Resident,

Re: Ward 1 – Community Engagement Virtual Meeting

850-1083 Rangeview Road and 830-1076 Lakeshore Road East (south side)

The City of Mississauga has received the submission of a Development Master Plan from Rangeview Landowners Group Inc. for the redevelopment of the Rangeview employment area.  Rangeview is located south of Lakeshore Road between East Avenue and Hydro Road in the Lakeview Community.  Rangeview Landowners Group Inc. owns 21 properties with Rangeview, representing 65% of the private landholdings in the area.

The Community Engagement virtual meeting I am hosting is being held to provide residents with more information and to have a discussion on the proposed development.

I have arranged a virtual Community Engagement meeting on Thursday, April 27, 2023 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you wish to attend and participate in the discussions, please  find the webex call in details below:

Peel’s spring battery collection is back

By Events, Ward 1

Peel Region is collecting single-use and rechargeable batteries at the curb from April 10 to 21.

Curbside battery collection happens in Peel each spring and fall, providing residents with a convenient way to safely dispose of their batteries and keep them out of landfill.

Follow these guidelines for the spring battery collection period:

  • Check your waste collection calendar online at peelregion.ca/waste to find your battery collection day.
  • Gather your used single-use and rechargeable batteries in a transparent, sealed bag.
  • On your designated battery collection day, place your battery bag on top of your closed green bin. If you don’t have a green bin, place your battery bag beside your recycling bags.
  • Special instruction only for rechargeable and 9V batteries: Tape the ends of all rechargeable and 9V batteries before disposal. Alkaline batteries do not need to be taped.

Thanks to Peel residents, we’ve collected over 179,600 kgs of batteries since the start of the program to ensure safe and responsible recycling of used batteries. Due to their hazardous materials, batteries do not belong in garbage or recycling bins.

Other tips:

  • Car batteries and sealed lead acid batteries are not accepted. Take them, free of charge, to any Peel Community Recycling Centre.
  • If you live in an apartment or condominium, check with your building property manager on how to dispose of batteries safely.

You can also find a drop-off location near you to safely dispose of used and old batteries throughout the year by visiting https://www.call2recycle.ca/recycleyourbatteries/.

Bringing the Lakeview Innovation District to Life

By Events, Planning & Development, Uncategorized, Ward 1

The City of Mississauga is seeking input on an incentive program that will help transform a former industrial area along the waterfront into a 20-acre innovation campus. The Lakeview Innovation District, part of the 177-acre Lakeview Village development, will become an employment hub where people can research, test and develop solutions in state-of-the-art offices, flex-offices and lab spaces.

The City is currently working on developing a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) to help bring the Innovation District to life. It could include incentives to encourage uses such as:

  • clean technology, including low carbon technology
  • life sciences, and
  • information and communications technology

Public and industry input is required to help define the types of incentives – both financial and non-financial – to help attract these uses.

“Waterfront redevelopments like Lakeview provide a unique, generational opportunity to foster innovation and spur economic growth and leading-edge technology,” said Christina Kakaflikas, Director, Mississauga Economic Development Office. “Mississauga is the second-largest employment hub in the Greater Toronto Area and the second-largest economy in Ontario. The Lakeview Innovation District will solidify our position as a major economic hub by creating thousands of highly skilled jobs in the key sectors we’re invested in growing on our waterfront.”

The City has launched a survey to take input on possible incentives including:
