Peel’s winter garbage exemption period

(December 16, 2019) – The Region of Peel reminds all residents about the change to its garbage exemption period for winter 2019.

February 3-7, 2020

There will be no garbage exemption during the holiday season. Check your collection calendar to find your garbage exemption day.

During the exemption period, remember to put your extra garbage out only on your garbage collection day, not on your recycling collection day.

There is no maximum amount of acceptable garbage (check our website for a full list of items) that you can put on the curb. Garbage bag tags are not required during exemption periods.

Excess garbage cannot:

  • Weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs).
  • Be larger than 66 cm (26 in) wide and 90 cm (35 in) high.
  • Be smaller than 30 cm (12 in) wide and 30 cm (12 in) high.

Put your excess garbage close to but not on top of your garbage bins, leaving at least 1 m (3 ft.) of clear space between your extra garbage item(s) and your bins.

Residents are also encouraged to check their collection calendar or sign-up to receive free weekly collection reminders by email, text message, or phone call.

Vacuum Leaf Program Update (December 12, 2019)

Vacuum Leaf Program is moving ahead

This has been a challenging season for the Vacuum Leaf Program with having three disruptive snow storms during the program. You would have received a colour coded notice card in the mail in the early fall with the pick-up dates for your area. Green and Yellow have now been completed. Crews have now moved into the Blue Zone, which included the Mineola’s and parts of Port Credit.  They are working diligently to get the program completed.

I would like to thank our residents for their patience and understanding during this challenging season.

Walk In The Park program

Park People is working with the City to bring their Walk in the Park program to older adults and seniors living in Mississauga.  They currently are accepting applications for community walk leaders with a working deadline of January 3rd.

Full details about the program, volunteer role, online application and associated training can be found on our webpage.  Parks staff will be posting in city-owned facilities.

Leaf Clean up Program – Update as of December 9, 2019

Please be advised that staff are currently changing over the trucks to start up the Vacuum Leaf Collection Program (VLCP) tomorrow.  Crews will continue their in the YELLOW zone and then move forward through as many zones as possible, depending on the weather.

The process will be slow due to possible frozen and wet leaves however, crews will do their best to collect as many leaves as possible.

I will provide an update to you indicating how the program is progressing during the week.

The Mississauga Miracle: 40th Anniversary Open House

November 10, 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the Mississauga Train Derailment.

At that time, the derailment was the largest peacetime evacuation in North America and has been dubbed by many as The Mississauga Miracle.

Join the Museums of Mississauga and Heritage Mississauga for an anniversary open house at The Grange and experience the Mississauga Miracle exhibition.

Mississauga Miracle Exhibition

The exhibition will feature local art, 50 oral histories of the experiences of those involved in the train derailment, records and artifacts related to the incident. The exhibition is on now until November 17 at Bradley Museum and The Grange.

Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) Addendum QEW Credit River Bridge Replacement – November 7, 2019

THE PROJECT
In 2013, the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) completed a study that followed the process for a Group ‘B’ project
under the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000), and identified a
strategy to accommodate future transportation requirements for the QEW from west of Mississauga Road to west
of Hurontario Street, and address the Credit River Bridge. The Class EA study was documented in a Transportation
Environmental Study Report (TESR) and recommended the following improvements:
• New QEW Credit River Bridge directly to the north of the existing bridge
• Rehabilitation of the existing QEW Credit River Bridge
• Reconstruction and reconfiguration of the existing QEW
• Reconfiguration of the Mississauga Road interchange including replacement of the Mississauga Road overpass
• Support facilities and features including landscaping, utilities, drainage and storm water management
improvements, illumination, noise walls, Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS)
In 2019, the province chose to implement this project through a Design-Build-Finance (DBF) Public Private
Partnership (P3) procurement model. Additionally, the Province chose to take an alternative approach to life cycle
asset management through replacement of the existing QEW Credit River Bridge rather than rehabilitation.
As the 2013 Class EA considered a rehabilitation scenario only, additional work is now being carried out to assess
impacts associated with the proposed replacement of the QEW Credit River Bridge; conduct further stakeholder
consultation; and prepare and file a TESR Addendum.
MTO is also working with the City of Mississauga to incorporate the City’s active transportation initiatives for
crossings over the Credit River and the QEW, and multi-use trails.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
MTO will be hosting a Public Information Centre (PIC) to provide the public and other interested stakeholders with
an opportunity to review and discuss the TESR Addendum study with members of the Project Team. The PIC will
follow a “drop-in” format.

• The study is examining the creek and associated
natural resources to identify existing erosion
problems, potential future risks, and opportunities
for restoration and environmental enhancement.
• Through the Class EA process, multiple alternative
solutions are being evaluated by the Study Team

select a Preferred Alternative and proceed with
design of the recommended works.

Help Shape the City’s New Economic Development Strategy

Mississauga residents are invited to help shape the City’s new Economic Development Strategy by completing an online survey. The survey will help the City identify priority areas and address the changing economic climate.

The five-year strategy will focus on attracting businesses, employment and investment opportunities to Mississauga. The last strategy was created 10 years ago and has helped Mississauga achieve many accolades including first overall mid-sized City of the Future by Foreign Direct Investment (fDi). The new strategy, now in development, will build on that success to continue to make Mississauga a thriving hub where businesses and the community can innovate and grow.

“Having a strong economic development strategy is the cornerstone of job creation – attracting and retaining global industries and securing talent,” said Bonnie Brown, Director, Economic Development. “Additionally, our strategy will help the City identify areas of focus and opportunities for innovation and collaboration with our 91,000 small businesses, 1,400 multinational firms and 75 Fortune 500 companies.”

The survey closes on October 18. Once the consultation period has concluded, the draft strategy will be presented to Council for approval.

Brown added, “We encourage our residents and business community to share their input and be part of shaping the City’s economic future.”

Peel offers curbside battery collection this fall

BRAMPTON, ON (Oct. 7, 2019) – Residents who are saving their single-use household batteries, can place these out for curbside collection which runs from October 21 – November 1, 2019. Residents are encouraged to check their collection calendar at peelregion.ca/waste to find out their battery collection day or to sign up to receive free waste notification reminders.

This collection service provides residents a convenient way to ensure that their batteries are disposed of safely.

Residents can:

  • Set out only single-use A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt and button cell household batteries in a transparent, sealable bag. On your recycling collection day, place the bag of batteries on top of your closed organics cart.  If you don’t have an organics cart, place your bag of batteries beside your recycling bags.
  • Take household batteries to battery drop-off barrels throughout Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.
  • Drop off all other batteries to one of Peel’s Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) year-round free of charge.

Visit peelregion.ca/waste to find a CRC or drop-off barrel near you.

Thanks to your efforts, we have recycled 67 tonnes of batteries since 2016 helping Peel get closer to its target of 75% waste diversion by 2034.
