Mississauga hits all the right notes as the 2023 Music City of the Year

By Announcement

The City of Mississauga has been named the 2023 Music City of the Year by the Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA) and Canadian Music Week (CMW). Mississauga was recognized for its efforts in establishing a Music Strategy with a goal of positioning the city as an incubator for top musical talent and a national destination for live music events and festivals.

“This is a great step forward in the future of making Mississauga a world renowned Music City displaying incredible talent,” says Councillor Dasko.

“It is an honour to receive this award! Our team is doing incredible work to put Mississauga on the map as a ‘Music City,’ and this award showcases the strides we’re making,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Our city is already home to world-class, diverse musicians and wonderful live music, but through continued efforts and investments in this sector, we are unlocking even greater economic and social benefits.”

The seventh annual Canadian Live Music Industry Awards brings together the Canadians behind live music for a night of celebration and recognition. The awards celebrate the ingenuity, perseverance and excellence demonstrated by live music companies, individuals and organizations over the past year. Finalists and awards are based on a vote by workers in the live music industry. The 2023 awards were presented during a ceremony held on June 9.

“This recognition is testament to the incredible effort taking place behind-the-scenes to not only advance the City’s Music Strategy but to amplify Mississauga’s music sector,” said Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services. “We want to be known as a city that makes things happen for local artists and talent. We have great spaces to share and enjoy music, and offer many professional development opportunities. As we look to the future, we will continue to build upon our guiding principles. Big thanks to CLMA and CMW for presenting our team with this incredible honour.”

Last year, the City announced its first Music Strategy: 2022-2026, which identifies 32 actions over the next five years to support the growth and development of Mississauga’s music industry. It focuses on four guiding principles, which include: amplifying Mississauga’s artists, creating a favourable environment for live music, supporting underrepresented people and groups and celebrating Mississauga’s history and success.

The Music City of Year award is presented to those making a demonstrated commitment to leveraging the power of live music locally, to rebuild, recover and grow thanks to live music.

Telephone #               905-791-7800 ext. 3246/3247

The Region of Peel Public Works department regularly maintains and repairs the water system to make sure you have a consistent supply of quality drinking water. Sometimes we must turn off your water supply while we do this work.

Your water will be turned off on   Friday, June 23rd, 2023, from approximately    05:00 a.m. to 06:30 a.m.     If we need to reschedule this work due to weather or other circumstances, we will let you know the new date and time.

If this interruption may affect an alarm or maintenance company, it is your responsibility to notify them.  During the time that the water supply is interrupted, the building’s sprinkler protection system will not function.  A fire watch should be performed as necessary during time.

After the water interruption:

When we turn the water back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise.  We recommend removing the air by slowly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor and finishing on the top floor). Flush the toilets as well. You will likely need to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds.  Run the water until it is clear, and any vibration or noise has stopped.

Important note:  After the water is turned back on, we recommend checking your water meter (usually located in the basement).  If it is leaking, call Water Meter Installations Dispatch at:

  • (905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 3226 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Monday to Friday)
  • (905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 4409 (After hours or Statutory Holidays)

PROJECT UPDATE Watermain Replacement and Improvement Dundas Street East from Dixie Road to Etobicoke Creek

By Resources

The Region of Peel has been working in your area to replace the watermain on Dundas Street East from Dixie Road to Etobicoke Creek.
At this time, we have:
• Replaced portions of the watermain on Dundas Street East,
• Temporarily repaired the driveways, road, curbs, and sidewalk where disturbed by the watermain replacement work.

The remaining work will be completed under the next phase of the project. We will shutdown the work on site and clean up the week of June 19, 2023. We will leave the construction site in a safe condition for the next two months. Some pipes and other materials will remain on site until they are ready to be installed during the next construction phase.

Schedule for remaining construction and repair work
We expect to start work again in September 2023 to complete the following:
• Replace the remaining watermain on Dundas Street East,
• Construct a tunneled section of watermain under Little Etobicoke Creek,
• Connect properties to the new watermain by replacing individual water service pipes/boxes on Dundas Street East,
• Temporarily repair the driveways, road, curbs, sidewalks, and sod (grass), where disturbed by the watermain replacement work.
We plan to complete this work by the end of 2024.

More details about the remaining work will be shared in a follow-up notice.

City of Mississauga roadwork and bus rapid transit project
The Region of Peel remains committed to coordinating our work with the City of Mississauga’s roadwork and Dundas Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project scheduled for 2025 on Dundas Street East (pending budget and council approval).

As this roadwork may impact the driveway, boulevard, street, curbs, and sidewalks, we will:
• Pave only the areas of the street directly disturbed,
• Fix damaged sidewalks and curbs using asphalt,
• Patch your driveway to cover any places we disturbed, as the future roadwork may affect the bottom of your driveway. After the city paves your street, the driveway will be repaired by paving a stripe over the disturbed area, resulting in minimal seams in the final driveway.

Peel Region’s repairs are temporary, as the city will complete restoration as part of their roadwork. Your city will send you a separate notice about their construction.

More information on the Dundas Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project can be found by contacting the City of Mississauga or visiting mississauga.ca/projects-and-strategies/city-projects/building-the-dundas-bus-rapid-transit

Important note
This upcoming construction will take place in the municipal right-of-way, the land owned by your city located between the street and your water service box (small, round metal valve in either your driveway or lawn). This work may impact the bottom of your driveway and the area around the sidewalk. We therefore recommend delaying any driveway paving or major landscaping until after the Region of Peel and the city have completed all construction work.

Settlement of the ground
It is normal for repaired areas to settle a bit in the coming months. If you notice large potholes forming in the driveway, street, lawn or boulevard, please let us know and we will ensure the contractor fixes this.

Keeping you informed
We will let you know if there are any major changes to the plans.
Receive timely project updates right to your inbox by signing up for e-notices. Visit peelregion.ca/construction/signup or scan the QR code below (using your cell phone camera) to start signing up.

Information on this project can also be found at peelregion.ca/pw/construction/miss/18-1310C.asp

Thank you for your patience as we complete this necessary work. This work will allow us to continue providing you with high quality tap water. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Council Approves Build Beautiful – the City’s New Stormwater Master Plan

By Announcement, Resources

Stormwater is the rain and melted snow that flows or runs off properties and roads that drains along streets, ditches, storm drains and watercourses into Lake Ontario. This week, Mississauga Council approved the City’s first Stormwater Master PlanBuild Beautiful. The long-term plan will be used to refine the City’s stormwater program, stormwater management systems and infrastructure.

“In Mississauga, we’re experiencing heavier rainfall and more severe storms related to climate change. Through the newly approved plan, the City can help address issues facing Mississauga today, including flooding, water quality and pollution while working to preserve our environment,” said Sam Rogers, Director, Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Services.

The Stormwater Master Plan builds on the City’s existing stormwater management program and outlines 22 actions with supporting activities and recommendations for managing rainwater in Mississauga.

Rogers added, “Freshwater is a scarce resource and Mississauga is fortunate to be located near the Great Lakes system, one of the largest freshwater resources in the world. Managing the City’s stormwater is very important. Rainwater and snowmelt end up in Lake Ontario, which is the City’s drinking water source. Stormwater management is crucial in protecting public safety and health, and works to reduce flood risks, control erosion and maintain water quality in local natural waterways.”

The City manages stormwater by planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining stormwater assets (i.e. sewers, catch basins, storm drains) within municipal roadways, public easements and other City lands. This includes:

  • Erosion and sediment control
  • Flood protection projects
  • Maintenance and repairs to existing infrastructure
  • Emergency response to flooding, spills and clean-up
  • Street sweeping
  • By-law enforcement to protect the environment and prevent interference with the operation of the stormwater management system

Climate Change and stormwater

The City’s Climate Change Action Plan identifies actions that the City plans to accomplish within the next five to ten years to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This includes several stormwater management actions to support resilient and sustainable infrastructure, including the recommendation to develop a Stormwater Master Plan.

Learn more about the City’s existing stormwater program and how the new Master Plan relates to climate change in Mississauga.

The City is working with its municipal partners, the Region of Peel, Credit Valley Conservation, Toronto Region Conservation Authority, Conservation Halton and Indigenous Peoples and Nations to ensure that the Build Beautiful plan continues to meet Mississauga’s changing needs now and in the future.
