Emancipation Day recognized in Mississauga – August 1st

By Events

Emancipation Day commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. It is observed on August 1 and is a day of reflection, education and engagement about the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination.

This year marks the 189th anniversary of Emancipation Day, when more than 800,000 enslaved Africans and their descendants in Canada, parts of the Caribbean, Africa and South America were freed on August 1, 1834.

You are invited to join the City of Mississauga as we acknowledge Canada’s painful history and address systemic racism and discrimination.

You can participate in honouring this important occasion by:

  • Attending the Pan-African flag raising (see details below)
  • Learning about the contributions and achievements of Black individuals in Canada through recommendations from the Mississauga Library’s specifically curated reading list.
  • Staying informed about the City’s ongoing commitment and actions to address systemic racism and racism including the Anti-Black and Indigenous Resolution 207 and the City’s first Black Community Engagement (BCE) Report.

The Region of Peel Public Works department regularly maintains and repairs the water system to make sure you have a consistent supply of quality drinking water. Sometimes we must turn off your water supply while we do this work.

Your water will be turned off on Tuesday, August 1st, 2023, from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If we need to reschedule this work due to weather or other circumstances, we will let you know the new date and time.

If this interruption may affect an alarm or maintenance company, it is your responsibility to notify them.  During the time that the water supply is interrupted, the building’s sprinkler protection system will not function.  A fire watch should be performed as necessary during time.

After the water interruption:

When we turn the water back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise.  We recommend removing the air by slowly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor and finishing on the top floor). Flush the toilets as well. You will likely need to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds.  Run the water until it is clear, and any vibration or noise has stopped.

Important note:  After the water is turned back on, we recommend checking your water meter (usually located in the basement).  If it is leaking, call Water Meter Installations Dispatch at:

  • (905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 3226 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Monday to Friday)

Indigenous Art Along the Waterfront

By Parks, Ward 1
Artwork along the waterfront will form a public art trail of works by Indigenous artists. This will include permanent public artworks, murals on buildings near the waterfront and the use of natural materials in public art installations.

Mississauga’s waterfront shoreline along Lake Ontario measures approximately 22 kilometres and extends west from Toronto towards Oakville. While there is Indigenous art located throughout the city, the shoreline of Lake Ontario provides rich opportunities to celebrate and honour Indigenous peoples, their culture, history and ongoing stewardship of the lands and waters.

A new webpage has been launched, and you can find it here.  The content includes an introductory section about the art trail as well as an “About the Curator” section featuring Philip Cote who is working with members of the Mississauga’s of the Credit First Nation and the City’s public art program on this project.
