Mississauga Green Development Standards Update – Have Your Say

By Food for thought, Planning & Development, Resources

Buildings in Mississauga are responsible for roughly 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, but we can reduce these emissions through building and site design.

The City of Mississauga’s Green Development Standard (GDS) has been the tool through which the Planning and Building Department promotes environmentally friendly development through the Site Plan process. The GDS is being updated as per action 3.1 in the Climate Change Action Plan.(External link)

Have your say, take the survey & review the metrics

There are two ways to provide your feedback, and you can participate in both: the survey and providing comments on the draft metrics. The survey consists of five parts and is expected to take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete. The survey will remain open until October 4, 2023. You can review the draft metrics and let us know what you think.

UPDATE: Port Credit Active Transportation Bridge over the Credit River

By Parks, Resources, Ward 1

Councillor Dasko has recently received an update from Transportation and Works staff regarding the pedestrian bridge that will span the Credit River just South of the train bridge.

Capital Works will be completing some road works on Front Street North, which will include realigning the sidewalk and constructing a parking lay-by in front of the Royal Canadian Legion. This work is in preparation for the new Port Credit Active Transportation Bridge which will connect Front St N, cross the Credit River and connect into Memorial Park.

The estimated date for this work is Spring-Summer 2024. In the meantime, an archaeological investigation is scheduled for October 2023.  The bridge construction will then commence in 2025.

Councillor Dasko will post updates as they become available.

Fire Station 102 Renovation

By Announcement, Resources, Ward 1

Fire Station 102, 710 Third Street, was built in 1979, it is 4,700 sq. ft.  There is currently one fire apparatus and one crew operating from this location.  With the population growth in the community since 1979 and the future planned growth, Lakeview and Brightwater to name a few, expanding the fire station to accommodate a future second apparatus and second crew is necessary to ensure that Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services is able to maintain efficient response capabilities.

In addition the extensive renovation and 885 sq. ft. addition will provide the accessibility, health and safety, and inclusive facility amenities necessary for a modern fire service.

Pre-construction site preparation has started, construction will start in October.  We anticipate the station will be completed by fall 2024.

Please see below for artistic renderings of the stations.

2023 Fall Leaf Pickup Program

By Resources, Ward 1
In the fall, the City of Mississauga provides a vacuum leaf pickup service on streets that are more than 35 years old and have many large mature trees.

Where leaves are picked up

You can refer to the leaf pickup route map and schedule to find out if your street is part of the leaf pickup program.

If your address is listed for the leaf pickup service, you’ll get a notice in the mail letting you know when leaves will be picked up in your area.

Rain or early snowfall can impact the collection schedule. To find out if your street is affected, you can call 311 (905-615-4311 outside City limits).

Preparing for leaf pickup

If your area is listed for leaf pickup:

  • Rake your leaves into a neat pile on the boulevard’s edge or into your ditch a day or two before the start of your collection week – Do not rake them onto the stret
  • Don’t mix other items such as wood, bricks or brush as they can damage equipment and injure workers
  • Keep the road and curbside storm drains clear of raked leaves
  • Do not place garbage bags or bins on top of loose leaf piles
  • Remove parked cars and sports equipment from the road

If you missed leaf pickup

If you missed the City’s leaf pickup or more leaves fall after your scheduled leaf pickup:

The Region of Peel will pick up leaves and yard waste that you have collected and placed in bins or paper bags on your regular waste collection day until December 8.

You can compost your leaves or spread them around the base of your trees to fertilize the soil by protecting it against extreme temperatures.
