September GO Service Changes

By Announcement, Resources

Several times a year, Metrolinx reviews and adjusts schedules network-wide to ensure GO Transit and UP Express services align with customer needs, while allocating resources to where they are needed most.

Upcoming changes on the Lakeshore West lines.

To better accommodate your schedules, most trips will be adjusted to depart either earlier or later.

Starting Tuesday September 5, 2023:

  • Certain trips may depart up to eight minutes earlier or up to nine minutes later than their previous schedule. Please check your schedules before you travel.
  • For Peel customers at our Mississauga stations, certain trips may depart up to eight minutes earlier or up to nine minutes later than their previous schedule. Please check your schedules before you travel.

Importantly, these adjustments will not affect the frequency of service you have come to rely on.

As you travel, we recommend listening closely to announcements on your train for specific directions. There might be instances where you’ll need to switch platforms at Union Station to continue your journey.

Customers are encouraged to visit Triplinx.ca to plan their trip and understand their travel options.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these service changes, including ways to address any constituent concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

SCHEDULED WATER INTERRUPTION NOTICE – 988 Pelham Ave – Wednesday, August 30, 2023, 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.

By Resources, Ward 1

INTERRUPTION DETAILS

Date and Time:         Wednesday, August 30, 2023, 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.

Location:                    988 Pelham Ave

Addresses Affected:  988-1011 Pelham Ave

Project #:                   C-603301

Regional Inspector:  John Sedore

Telephone #               416-706-1114 ext. 3246/3247

The Region of Peel Public Works department regularly maintains and repairs the water system to make sure you have a consistent supply of quality drinking water. Sometimes we must turn off your water supply while we do this work.

Your water will be turned off on Wednesday, August 30,  2023, from approximately 09:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m.  If we need to reschedule this work due to weather or other circumstances, we will let you know the new date and time.

If this interruption may affect an alarm or maintenance company, it is your responsibility to notify them.  During the time that the water supply is interrupted, the building’s sprinkler protection system will not function.  A fire watch should be performed as necessary during time.

After the water interruption:

When we turn the water back on, air in the pipes may make the water cloudy and your plumbing may vibrate or make noise.  We recommend removing the air by slowly turning on your taps from the lowest to the highest faucet in the building (that is, starting in the basement/first floor and finishing on the top floor). Flush the toilets as well. You will likely need to run the water for 10 to 30 seconds.  Run the water until it is clear, and any vibration or noise has stopped.

Important note:  After the water is turned back on, we recommend checking your water meter (usually located in the basement).  If it is leaking, call Water Meter Installations Dispatch at:

  • (905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 3226 (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Monday to Friday)
  • (905) 791 – 7800 Ext. 4409 (After hours or Statutory Holidays)

Keep Road Safety in Mind as New School Year Begins

By Announcement, Youth

Mississauga roads will get busier once again as thousands of students, from pre-school to college and university, head back to school starting Tuesday, September 5. Students will be walking, riding their bikes and scooters, taking school buses or MiWay buses, and being driven to and from school. The City of Mississauga reminds all road users to stay alert and be aware when using roads to help prevent collisions.

“I urge all road users to remain attentive and take precautions to prevent collisions during the busy travel periods. Our students deserve to be safe in and out of the classroom,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “As a driver, slow down and watch for students, especially in school zones, and stop for school buses when you see their red lights flashing. If you’re a student, stay alert and be aware while making your way to and from school. Remember, stay safe and have a great first day back!”

The City has more than 215 school crossing guards at more than 160 locations who will be ready on the first day of school to help elementary school students cross the road safely. The City’s Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee conducts site inspections and safety reviews at or near schools on request to help improve student safety at any school location.

“We’re continuing to work towards our commitment of achieving Vision Zero in Mississauga and keeping students safe on our roads,” said Geoff Wright, Commissioner of Transportation and Works. “This year so far, we’ve placed speed cameras in 38 school zones to help combat speeding on our roadways. On high-speed City roadways, we’ve lowered speed limits from 70 km/h to 60 km/h  to help reduce the risk of collisions and make City roads safer for all users. We’ve also started to implement Pedestrian and Bike Head Start Signals at intersections to give pedestrians and cyclists a five-second head start to cross the road before vehicles.”

The City also has a School Walking Routes program that promotes active travel, such as walking, biking or using a mobility device, to and from school. School Route signs installed around the neighbourhood guide students on their way to school and alert drivers to watch for children.

For more road safety information and additional safety tips visit, mississauga.ca/roadsafety. For more information about Vision Zero, visit mississauga.ca/visionzero.

Safety tips for families who walk, cycle or take a bus to school:

Plan and practise your school route as a household ahead of time, including safe places to cross the street.
When possible, always use crosswalks or crossrides to cross the street. Walk your bike or scooter across roads when no crossrides are available.
Look both ways before you cross the road to make sure the intersection or crosswalk is clear of vehicles.
If your route to school is near a railway crossing, make sure to follow all railway-crossing safety rules.
When waiting for a school bus or MiWay bus, stand back from the curb and don’t approach the bus until it comes to a full stop.
Follow the instructions of your school crossing guard.
Wear a helmet when biking, skateboarding or riding your scooter to and from school and obey all signs, laws and signals.
Safety tips for drivers:
Be alert, obey the posted speed limits, and follow the rules at drop-off and pick-up locations to help keep everybody safe.
When stopping or parking for school drop-off or pick-up, do not block sightlines near crosswalks or intersections. Never pick-up or drop-off in a spot where your student must cross the road between stopped cars.
Look out for students walking or rolling, especially when turning and in areas with many stopped cars.
At stop signs, drivers are required to come to a complete stop and yield the appropriate right-of-way before proceeding through the intersection. This includes the stop sign held by a school crossing guard.
At crossings, check the entire crosswalk for pedestrians and cyclists, and do not proceed until they have completed the crossing.
Stop for school buses and don’t attempt to pass them. Do not go until the red lights stop flashing.
Avoid distractions when driving including looking at your phone or drinking coffee.
Consider leaving the car at home. If you normally drive to the bus stop, consider walking instead. If you must drive, consider driving partway and walking the rest of the way to reduce congestion and improve safety in front of the school.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE Sanitary Sewer Maintenance Hole Rehabilitation

By Resources, Ward 1

Peel Region will be working to rehabilitate or replace aging maintenance holes (commonly called manholes) in various locations across Peel. This work will ensure the sanitary sewer system can continue to be accessed and maintained from the manholes. Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home to a wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater is created when water is flushed down the toilet, or goes down the drain in your sink, tub, or shower.

The majority of our work will involve repairing maintenance holes. When we need to fully or partially replace the maintenance hole, we will share additional information with affected residents and businesses before the work begins.

You can see where Peel Region construction is planned for your neighbourhood by searching your address within our online map at peelregion.ca/construction

Construction schedule
This work is planned to begin August 18, 2023, and be completed in the middle of 2024. During this time, we will be rehabilitating or replacing approximately 63 maintenance holes. It typically takes a few hours to three days to repair a single maintenance hole, depending on the work required. When the maintenance hole needs to be completely replaced, this work may take a couple of weeks. All work is under warranty for two years from the completion date.

Contractor and working hours
The work will be completed by Michels Canada Co. and supported by Andrews.Engineer, both under contract to Peel Region. This contractor’s normal working hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. These hours are consistent with the local municipality’s bylaws. We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but shorter working days would require your area to be under construction for a longer period of time.

Traffic and parking
We may need to temporarily reduce traffic to a single lane during construction. If we must reroute traffic, we will place signs giving directions. On-street parking will be reduced during construction when we are actively working on your street.

Driveway access
It may be necessary to block your driveway for a short time when crews are working on the maintenance hole or repairing the resulting damage to the road. If so, we will knock on your door to notify you. Whenever possible, we will work to ensure businesses can be accessed. Please contact us if you have special needs related to access.

Areas impacted by construction
Repairing maintenance holes often requires digging around the existing maintenance holes to install new parts. These maintenance holes are usually located within the municipal right-of-way, which includes the street and the land owned by the municipality between the street and your water service box. (The water service box is a small,
round, metal valve located outside, on the property line between your house and the road.) If maintenance holes are not within the right-of-way, Peel Region has obtained legal access through easements.
Depending on the location of the maintenance hole, this work may cause temporary damage to roads, curbs, sidewalks, boulevards, driveway aprons, and lawns within the municipal right-of-way or easement. Any damage caused by Regional construction will be repaired.

In-ground sprinkler systems
If the construction inspector notifies you that your front lawn may be affected by this construction work (and you have an in-ground sprinkler system), we strongly recommend moving any sprinkler lines that are located in the municipal right-of-way or within one metre of the maintenance hole. If you can’t relocate these sprinkler lines, please send us a map created by your irrigation contractor or flag each sprinkler head that is located within one meter of the sidewalk, curb, or driveway. This will allow us to minimize the impact to your sprinkler system.

Tree trimming
If tree branches within the municipal right-of-way interfere with construction, the trees will be pruned beforehand.
If tree branches on private property interfere with construction, they will be pruned back to the nearest suitable trunk or branch. If you do not allow personnel onto your property to trim the tree, the branches will be cut vertically at the property line.
In Mississauga, trees located in the municipal right-of-way will be protected during construction using temporary fencing.

Repairing areas impacted by construction
We will start repairing any affected areas of the road, curb, sidewalk, driveways, and lawns once we have rehabilitated or replaced the maintenance holes. Repairs may be delayed due to contractor availability or certain seasonal weather conditions.

For example:
• Paving cannot take place when the ground is saturated with water, or the temperature is below 3°C.
• Asphalt is not available in large volumes during the winter. Asphalt usually becomes available around mid-May.
• Most sod farms are located north of Peel. They usually have sod available beginning in late May. We will replace the sod on your property once it is available. We replace sod only until the middle of November, weather permitting, to let the sod grow roots. If we do not repair your lawn by the middle of November, we’ll replace the sod the following spring.

Repairing grassy areas

If this construction work impacts the boulevard or your lawn, the contractor will replace any damaged sod (grass) and will take care of the new sod for 30 days. You can help the sod stay healthy by watering it. A longer ‘deep root watering’ works better to establish new sod than watering more frequently for a shorter time. Watering in the early morning allows more water to soak in instead of evaporating.

Repairing driveways
If the construction inspector notifies you that your driveway may be affected by this construction work, all damage caused by Regional construction will be repaired.
• Asphalt driveways: If we need to cut a section of your driveway, the driveway will be repaired by paving a strip over the disturbed area, resulting in minimal seams in the final driveway. Peel Region cannot replace your entire driveway.
• Interlock or concrete driveways: If we damage a portion of your driveway, our contractor will reinstate the damaged portion of the driveway.

Waste collection
If you receive waste collection from Peel Region, and our construction work is happening in front of your home during your waste collection day, it is the contractor’s responsibility to move your garbage, recycling, and organics bins from the end of your driveway to a location where waste collection vehicles can pick them up. Empty containers will be returned to their corresponding addresses. Please make sure your house number is clearly marked on each bin. This helps us return empty bins to the correct address.

Vibrations
You could feel slight vibrations from the construction work.

Safety during construction
Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible. To learn more about how to stay safe in construction zones, visit peelregion.ca/workzonesafety

Staying informed
Information on this construction project can also be found at peelregion.ca/pw/construction/22-2307.asp

Thank you for your patience as we complete this necessary work. This work will allow us to continue providing you with high quality wastewater services. If you have any questions, please contact us.
