Construction Notice PROJECT UPDATE Storm Sewer Rehabilitation At Dixie Road and Dundas Street

By Resources, Ward 1

Project 21-2300D

Peel Region is working in your neighbourhood to rehabilitate the storm sewer on Dixie Road at Dundas Street.
The City of Mississauga, under the Noise Bylaw, is allowing work to be done by our contractor overnight. This work will take place overnight to rehabilitate the storm sewer on Dixie Road and to minimize the impact of traffic congestion. We apologize in advance for any inconveniences caused by this work.

Schedule
This overnight work is expected to take place for one evening, November 27, 2023, from 7pm until 7am. Additional nights may be required due to unpredictable delays, such as poor weather conditions.

Traffic impacts
This work will require a lane closure of north bound Lane at Dixie Road south of Dundas Street from 7pm to 7am . Signage will be available for detour route directions.

Noise
We do not anticipate significant noise or vibrations above normal daytime traffic levels during these operations. Efforts will be made to reduce impacts to residents as much as possible.

Safety during construction
Construction zones require extra caution to keep everyone safe – pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and construction workers. When driving, walking, or biking through the construction area, please be aware of your surroundings, watch for construction crews and other road users, slow down, account for delays, and consider other routes if possible. To learn more about how to stay safe in construction zones, visit peelregion.ca/workzonesafety

Keeping you informed
We will let you know if there are any major changes to the plans.

City holds public meeting on increasing housing choices in neighbourhoods

By Events, Planning & Development

Mississauga needs more housing options for families, older adults, students and others who want to live in low-rise neighbourhoods. Increasing the supply and variety of homes across Mississauga through gentle density is a primary action in the City’s Housing Action Plan.

The City is holding a statutory public meeting at Planning and Development Committee to present draft regulations to allow residents to build up to four residential units on low-rise residential lots.

Meeting Details

When:  Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 6 p.m.

Where:  Council Chambers, City Hall

Participate:  Watch the live stream on the City’s website (without registering) or join in person at City Hall. Instructions on how to register for the meeting are included in the meeting agenda.

Note: The housing information session planned for December 6 has been postponed until 2024.

Background

Mississauga City Council has long supported exploring policies to introduce gentle density and build more housing.

  • The City’s Increasing Housing Choices in Neighbourhoods (IHCN) work, which began in 2021, established new zoning and Official Plan regulations for additional residential units such as garden suites, garage conversions and laneway suites and allows up to three residential units on a lot.
  • IHCN stemmed from Mississauga’s 2017 Making Room for the Middle affordable housing strategy. At the time, the City was one of the first municipalities in Canada to develop a housing strategy focused on middle-income earners.

National Housing Day in Mississauga

By Uncategorized

On November 22, the City will mark National Housing Day, a day that recognizes the important work by housing partners across Canada to improve access to housing for all.

Housing affordability continues to be a major issue in Mississauga. The average price of a single-detached home is $1.5 million and the average monthly rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is approximately $3,000. The City is working to tackle the issue by implementing Growing Mississauga, our action plan for new housing.

“National Housing Day provides an opportunity to reflect on housing affordability in our City,” said Acting Mayor and Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca.  “As a municipality, we’ve made progress in protecting rental stock and requiring more affordable units, but there is more work to do. We are committed to using all the tools we have – and working with all of our partners – to make Mississauga a place that everyone can afford to call home.”

City taking action on housing

The City’s housing plan includes a number of actions to increase the supply of housing and to help improve affordability. Here are some of the actions the City is taking right now to get more housing built:

  • Increasing missing middle housing in residential neighbourhoods by allowing more housing types such as triplexes, fourplexes, garden suites and garage conversions to be built without special zoning permissions
  • Creating opportunities for homes in new mixed-use, transit-friendly communities
  • Overhauling the City’s development application review processes to streamline and expedite approvals

To help make housing more affordable, the City is:

  • Rolling out the City’s affordable rental incentive program
  • Working with the province to ensure rental housing is protected and expanded
  • Continuing to negotiate affordable units through the development application process
  • Implementing our new Inclusionary Zoning policy which requires affordable housing units in new developments in major transit station areas

The City is also making it easier to track housing data with the launch of our new online dashboard. As of October 31, the City has:

  • Approved 4,946 new residential units (through Official Plan Amendments and Rezoning applications)
  • Issued building permits for 3,495 new residential units

Mississauga currently has almost 11,000 new units under construction and more than 33 cranes dotting our skyline.
