Celebrate Mississauga’s 50th Anniversary with your photography

By Events, Youth

The Mississauga Library invites teens and young adults (12-24) to celebrate our city’s 50th anniversary by sharing photos that show their love for the city.

June 17, 2024

In celebration of the City’s 50th anniversary, the Mississauga Library is excited to invite youth ages 12-24 in our community to showcase their talent and love for the city through photography. Participants are encouraged to submit photos of their favourite places in Mississauga, capturing the essence and beauty of our city through their eyes. We encourage participants to capture the places they love and find meaningful in their city. This can include parks, landmarks, community spaces, neighbourhoods, or hidden gems.

Submission Period

Applications for photo submissions are open from June 1, 2024, until August 31, 2024. This gives our young photographers ample time to capture and submit their most meaningful and artistic photographs.

Selection and Exhibition

All submitted images will be archived in the Historic Images Gallery, preserving the youth’s vision of Mississauga for future generations. The Teen Advisory Group will short-list ten submissions based on specific judging criteria. These finalists will be featured online for public voting and displayed digitally and in print at the Bradley Museum’s “Out of the Vault” 50th Anniversary Exhibition. The exhibition, running from September to December 2024, will offer attendees a unique glimpse into the city’s history and future through the lens of its younger residents.

Participation Benefits

This is a fantastic opportunity for young photographers to have their work recognized and preserved in the city’s historical archives. Additionally, it offers a platform for youth to engage with their community and meaningfully contribute to the 50th-anniversary celebrations.

For More Information

For additional details on the photo submission process, eligibility, and the upcoming exhibition, please visit the Snapshots of Mississauga webpage.

Join us in celebrating Mississauga’s 50th anniversary and share your vision of our city through photography. This is your chance to be a part of history!

Learn to Fish – Mississauga – Lakefront Promenade and Lake Aquitaine

By Announcement, Events, Parks, Ward 1

Free Learn to Fish Program 2024

Last year, City of Mississauga Parks staff worked with the MNRF to deliver their Learn to Fish program in an urban centre.  They had 10 pop-up sessions between Lake Aquitaine and Lakefront Promenade throughout Summer 2023.  These sessions had 219 participants in total with an equal split between children and adults.  The participation was higher than anticipated and MNRF was not expecting such a high percentage of adults.

As a result of the success of these 10 sessions, staff have been working with MNRF to bring the Learn to Fish program to Mississauga on a more regular basis.  We are happy to announce that the program will be at Lakefront Promenade and Lake Aquitaine starting this weekend to the end of August all summer long.

The Learn to Fish program is a free program that teaches new anglers of all ages how to fish in Ontario. This fun and engaging 2–hour program combines a 1-hour practical teaching session with one hour of supervised hands-on fishing.

Sign up with your group by reaching out to Leah Silverman at parks.communitydevelopment@mississauga.ca. To sign up individually online: Learn to Fish | ontario.ca

Dates available from mid-June to the end of August at Lake Aquitaine or Lakefront Promenade.

Mississauga introduces new ‘Invest Mississauga’ brand to support the city’s status as a global business centre

By Announcement, Events, Resources

The City of Mississauga has recently introduced Invest Mississauga, a new brand for its economic development division. This new identity highlights Mississauga’s status as a global center of diverse economic activities and its robust and expanding technology sector.

June 17, 2024

At this week’s Collision Conference, the City of Mississauga officially launched Invest Mississauga, a new brand for its economic development division. The new brand highlights Mississauga’s position as one of the world’s most diverse economies with a strong and growing tech sector.

An identifer for Invest Mississauga which is navy, white and yellow.

“Invest Mississauga is among Canada’s most trusted economic development organizations,” said Christina Kakaflikas, Director, Economic Development at the City of Mississauga. “Our goal is to foster a competitive, prosperous, sustainable and inclusive economy by helping businesses of all sizes grow and succeed. Our customer-focused approach provides customized market data, reliable advice, programming and access to valuable networks that help make business decisions easier, faster and more effective at all stages of growth.”

Today, every company is becoming a tech company by investing in and integrating new ways of doing business through technology to stay competitive. Advanced technologies like robotics and AI are creating new opportunities for companies across every business sector in Mississauga. Invest Mississauga’s leadership, together with the city’s strength across key knowledge-based sectors, makes Mississauga the place for tech and other companies to invest and grow.

Mississauga’s growing tech sector

Mississauga’s tech sector comprises more than 940 companies and 44,000 highly skilled workers. With nearly a third (28 per cent) of the City’s post-secondary educated workforce specializing in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Mississauga is a front-runner for companies developing and integrating emerging technologies across diverse business sectors including life sciences, advanced manufacturing, financial services, smart logistics and others.

Kakaflikas added, “Invest Mississauga is continuing to build on Mississauga’s future as a world-leading, innovative economic centre. From startup to multinational enterprise, we work directly with entrepreneurs and business leaders to understand their needs and provide strategies and resources that will help them grow and achieve their goals.”

For example, Medtech employment in Mississauga has nearly doubled since 2016. Mississauga is a world-leader in life sciences and health technology with global companies and startups operating in Medtech, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, and many other subsectors. The city has the second-largest Life Sciences cluster in Canada with more than 500 companies that employ 27,000 people. There has been a $1.5 billion boost in new life sciences investments in Mississauga since 2020.

IDEA Mississauga, an arm of Invest Mississauga supports the city’s startup community, and accelerates inclusive entrepreneurship. Through the IDEA Entrepreneurship Hub, located inside the Square One Shopping Centre, entrepreneurs can come together in a collaborative, creative space. Founders can connect with mentors, partners, and have access to talent and programming that will help take their ventures to the next level.

Invest Mississauga can provide resources and programming to help companies across all sectors grow and maintain their competitive edge.
