Although the pandemic has kept us indoors for most of this year and last, the sun is shining on Mississauga Celebration Square and throughout the city this summer.
From celebrating a milestone anniversary to strolling through art exhibits, boredom won’t be available in Mississauga as the weather starts to heat up.
To help get your summer bucket list started, listed below are 10 must-do activities.
- Celebration
Mississauga Celebration Square is celebrating a very special anniversary this summer. It’s been a decade since the Square started welcoming residents and visitors as the city’s newest hotspot for concerts, cultural events, splash pad picnic days, outdoor exercise classes and much more. In the past 10 years, more than six million people have had the opportunity to include the Square in their all-time best memories. Scroll through the list below for celebratory activities taking place at the Square throughout the season.
- Coming home
In the spirit of returning home to the Square this summer, MCS will be hosting Mi Casa, You Casa, an artwork by Mexican artists, Esrawe + Cadena. This interactive experience is centered around 14 red houses. The structures are framed but not covered, making them ideal for reconnecting and enjoying the company of others while still maintain social distance. Mi Casa, Your Casa will be available daily at the Square from July 30 through September 6.
- Shopping
All summer long, visitors to the Square will have the opportunity to browse and purchase original works from local artists. The pop-up and pop-in former shipping container will be home to a new Mississauga Resident Artist every weekend from July 9 through September 6.
- Cooling down
Is it hot enough for you? If so, a prime cool-down location is available in the centre of the city. The Square’s huge wading pool is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Increased safety measures will be in place.
- Strolling
Tired of the same old meals and snacks? Inspiration is needed and can be found while wandering through the Lions Farmers Market. Fruits and veggies? Of course, but it doesn’t end there. Market vendors have a variety of items for sale including homemade preserves, honey and baked goodies. The market is open on the Square every Wednesday from June 2 through October 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Culture
See new, innovative digital screen-based works by local, national and international artists on the large screens located on either side of the Celebration Square main stage. This annual public art series will begin June 21 and continue on Monday evenings until August 30.
- Legends
Mississauga Legends Row is located at the entrance to the Jubilee Garden on Celebration Square. It’s a permanent, outdoor space celebrating the achievements and contributions of prominent figures in Mississauga. Visitors can explore, learn and be inspired by the inductees and their contributions to creating a better Mississauga.
- Eating
Open seven days a week, the food trucks on Celebration Square will take all your senses for a ride. Open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the trucks are spaced a minimum of 12 feet apart and six-foot physical distancing markers are placed throughout the Square for visitor safety and compliance. This summer’s lineup of deliciousness includes food from:
- Le Chateau Chicken
- Dimkin’s Crepes
- GOGI
- BeaverTails
- The Cuban Thing
- Love
Local artist Bareket Kezwer has created an immersive mural entitled Loving Kindness. Don’t just see it on social media – being close to the mural will help to put you in the relaxed, summer state-of-mind. All physical distancing guidelines will be in place.
- Birthdays
Mark #SaugaCanadaDay virtually this year.
In addition to the official ceremony, there are also a number of other activities taking place including:
- Instead of Canada Day, it’s Canada 10 Days on Celebration Square. Themed activities will take place daily from June 25 through July 4. Visitors can expect the fun atmosphere you’d expect from the Square with COVID-safe activities and onsite installations.
o Activities include
- We Can Dance, created by Daily tous les jours, is a never-ending, social-distanced dance party.
- MCS Canada Day Playlist, available for streaming on July 1, the playlist features local talent and some of the country’s biggest tracks.
- Virtual Fireworks App presented by Tim Horton’s. There won’t be fireworks on the Square but you can definitely enjoy them virtually by downloading the free app on any mobile device. Access unique Canada Day content, including a remarkable augmented reality virtual fireworks display from anywhere in the city.
- Virtual Canada Day Finale. Click back to the Square’s Canada Day webpage at 10 p.m. for a spectacular virtual, Canada Day finale.
Due to provincial gathering restrictions, there will be no official Canada Day event or fireworks display at Celebration Square. Information on these activities and many more can be found by clicking mississauga.ca/happy10MCS.
In addition to the fun taking place on the Square and @mcsevents, Mississauga will be fully charged on Canada Day with activities taking place throughout the City including:
- The Streetsville BIA’s annual Canada Day Celebration will include LED trucks driving around Streetsville playing a selection of music by Canadian artists. The trucks will also play the National Anthem while local buildings project the Canadian flag on their façades. There will be a spectacular virtual fireworks display on the trucks as they continue their drive through the village. - The Malton BIA will be distributing Canada Day flags to display in local business and will have trivia on their social media channels for all to play on Canada Day. Check out @MaltonBIA on Twitter and @malton.bia on Instagram for details.
- The Port Credit BIA’s annual Paint the Town Red celebration will be transforming to a fall event called A Thanksgiving to Remember. Canada Day will be celebrated on Monday, October 11 with a parade, activities at Memorial Park, entertainment and fireworks.
